Okay, What’s the Deal with Wedding Insurance?!

Weddings are both emotional and financial investments. So, it’s no surprise that you want to do anything you can to protect it in the event anything goes wrong. With the current pandemic the world is facing, couples everywhere are wondering “How can I protect my wedding!?” The answer, Wedding Insurance!!

The coronavirus has seriously affected the wedding industry. It has pushed couples to either postpone or cancel their special day all over the world. Not only that, but most couples are finding that their insurance wouldn’t cover the cost of cancellations. Little did we all know that global pandemics aren’t typically a covered reason in most wedding insurance policies.

So, now the answer we all want to know is “How can I protect my wedding when things go wrong?” Let’s break it down:

What is Wedding Insurance:

It is a specific type of special event insurance that protects you from losses that may happen due to various factors. This could include unforeseen events causing damage or injury at a wedding, external events beyond your control that may prevent your wedding from occurring, extreme weather, problems with the venue or vendors.

Types

There are two different kinds of wedding insurance:

Liability: This covers injuries or property damages that occur during your ceremony or reception. Some venues actually require this.
Cancellation Coverage: This protects you from unforeseen circumstances that result in postponement or canceling your wedding. This could include illness or injury, extreme weather, issues with the venue, etc… This does not cover “cold feet” or change of heart situations.

It is also possible to purchase insurance that will cover both!

How Much Does it Cost?

You should expect to pay anywhere from $75 – $500 for your wedding insurance. Like with any type of insurance there are different levels of coverage. It is also a one-time premium. Insurance companies have made getting a quote easy so shop around for the best possible option in terms of price and coverage for you.

Do I Need Wedding Insurance?

In Hawaii, the average wedding costs $30K – $60K. So, spending a little extra on the insurance that could protect that investment should anything happen definitely seems worth it. Check with your venue to see what type of liability insurance they have so that you are not buying insurance for something that is already covered. You don’t want to over-insure yourself or double insure yourself. Also, look into your homeowner’s insurance or credit cards that may cover certain areas and could save you money on your wedding insurance policy.

When to Buy?

It is certainly worth looking into wedding insurance when you start planning. However, some companies will actually let you purchase insurance as close as 24 hours before your wedding date.

Where to Buy?

There are tons of companies out there that offer wedding insurance. DO your due diligence and research each of them thoroughly as there is an insurer out there for everyone’s specific situation. Here are a few worth checking out:

Wedding Insurance and the CoronaVirus

One thing the pandemic has taught us is that anything is possible, we are all finding ourselves in a situation no one could have ever imagined. This situation has opened up a whole new can of worms in the wedding insurance world. Many couples have found that their policies actually do not cover a global pandemic.

If you are planning a wedding and looking into wedding insurance now, PLEASE be sure to ask tons of questions and inquire what exactly is covered. As the pandemic is now a “known event” it means there is a high possibility it won’t be covered under any insurance policies. Please also note that due to the pandemic some insurance companies have actually halted issuing new policies due to the high level of uncertainty as to when this will pass.
