Working at an estate property for a wedding is very different than a hotel scene. The couple has to provide everything from the tables and chairs down to the wind clips to keep the linens from blowing away. Everything to create the wedding scene must be brought in and organized, meaning the job is twice as involved for the coordinator.
One aspect of a wedding we had in early October was unexpected, and caused a little dinner excitement?
The reception program had begun, and everyone was settling down from the grand entrance and announcements. Folks were lining up along the buffet to finally enjoy the delicious food they had been smelling since they walked in the reception door! Our coordinators were at the end of the buffet line, unwrapping plates to stack up for the guests’ use. All of a sudden, one of the table legs of the buffet gave way, and chafing dishes were sliding off the table! The burners went rolling, the hot water splashed everywhere, and pork lau lau and chicken long rice pans went flying.
It was by a stroke of luck that our coordinators were standing near the end of the table the moments it was happening, and they rushed in to help. One coordinator managed to grab the lau lau dish before it went crashing to the floor, and another grabbed the huge tray of sweet potatoes. Unfortunately, the hot dish of chicken long rice crashed to the floor and made quite the mess.
Immediately our team stepped in to fix the table, prop the saved food back up, and clear a walking area for the remaining guests in the line. We were all a bit frazzled, not to mention pretty dirty from the dinner mess, but we straightened our jackets, cleaned up, and continued on with the program. The bride and groom didn’t even bat an eye, and were so thankful we were willing to step in. What a bit of excitement that was!
