Upcountry Maui is nothing like the rest of the island. It is where beaches turn to farmland, rolling hills, and eventually Maui’s world-famous volcano and highest peak, Haleakala. The base of the volcano provides rich soil for some of the best farmland in the state and a home for Paniolo’s (Hawaiian Cowboys). This is the real country vibe. The highlight of upcountry is most definitely the views, specifically the epic sunrises from the top of the 10,023-foot volcano.
